Air Chief Marshal Somkid Sukbang, the Royal Aide-de-Camp to Her Royal Highness Princess Pacharakitiya Apai Narenthirath, Director of the Royal Household Bureau, and Vice Chair of the Guardianship Fund, presided over the opening ceremony of the seminar titled "The Elderly and Financial Threats (Beyond Imagination): Guardianships and the Elderly: The Perfect Crime" at the Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao, Bangkok, on March 18, 2568.
Currently, Thai society is transitioning to an "ageing society," and it has been observed that elderly individuals may lose their assets due to deception by relatives, caretakers, and fraudsters. The loss of property among the elderly often results from their declining physical condition and health, which impacts their decision-making processes regarding asset management—leading to a lack of caution. Furthermore, rapid advancements in technology have caused asset management procedures to evolve with the times, complicating the ability of the elderly to keep up with and understand these changes, such as using technology for monitoring and legal transactions related to their assets, including mobile banking systems, personal identity verification, and passwords.
As a result, elderly individuals often rely on assistance from family members, close friends, caregivers, or neighbors to manage their transactions, which can make them susceptible to asset fraud or mismanagement. It has also been found that the elderly are a primary target for fraudsters, particularly those who live alone. Additionally, within the prison system, there are elderly prisoners who continue to fall victim to deception or are manipulated into committing offenses.
The Emotional Support Program held a meeting to address the topic of elder protection, drawing lessons from the United States as outlined in the book "Guardianships and the Elderly: The Perfect Crime." The aim was to foster thought-provoking discussions among judges, those involved in the justice process, and the public, particularly raising awareness in the elderly community to protect them from becoming victims of ill-intentioned individuals who exploit their physical decline for criminal purposes. The seminar aimed to prevent elderly individuals, both in prison and in society, from becoming victims of crime and violence, ultimately reducing the burden on correctional facilities and ensuring that elderly individuals maintain a better quality of life, free from incarceration.
