Kamlangjai Project Showcases Exhibition at ONCB’s "Recovery Run" Event, Promoting Second Chances and Reducing Stigma for a Fresh Start in Society

On June 14, 2026, at 04:30 AM, the Justice Innovation Development Division showcased an exhibition on the Kamlangjai (Inspire) Project, initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha. The division also brought role models from the project to participate in the "Recovery Run" (วิ่งด้วยรัก ฮักด้วยใจ) event. Organized by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) in observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the event took place at Suan Luang Rama IX, Prawet District, Bangkok.

More than 1,200 people—including the general public, runners, network partners, recovering drug dependents, and their families—joined the event to spread encouragement, build correct public understanding, and support the reintegration of reformed individuals into society under the concept: "Every Opportunity... Creates a New Beginning."

The event was organized through the collaboration of public, private, and civil society sectors, alongside international organizations that support the rehabilitation of drug users. Key attendees included Mr. Samruam Boonserm, Assistant Permanent Secretary for Justice, and Mrs. Arporn Kaewviangchai, Director of the Justice Innovation Development Division. Pol. Maj. Suriya Singhakamol, Secretary-General of the ONCB, presided over the opening ceremony.

In his opening remarks, the ONCB Secretary-General stated that the drug problem is a challenge that requires cooperation from all sectors. Sustainable solutions must look at prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation simultaneously to ensure recovering individuals can successfully reintegration into society. On this occasion, the Secretary-General presented plaques of appreciation to partner agencies hosting exhibitions, including the Kamlangjai Project.

Collaboration Between Kamlangjai Project and ONCB

The Kamlangjai Project exhibition highlighted its achievements and its long-standing collaboration with the ONCB. The ONCB provides financial support to the project through the Kamlangjai Fund in recognition of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha's royal grace toward prison inmates.

Data shows that 75% of prison inmates committed drug-related offenses. Upon their release, if they lack employment or the means to support themselves, there is a high probability of recidivism. Consequently, since 2010, the ONCB has continuously provided occupational grants of up to 20,000 Baht per person to individuals after their release.

Occupational Grant Statistics (Through the Kamlangjai Project & ONCB):

  • 2010 – 2024: 463 grants awarded in total.
  • 2025: Paused for 1 year.
  • 2026: Currently seeking approval for 80 grants.

Past grant recipients have successfully built sustainable livelihoods across various professions, including:

  • Agriculture: 202 individuals
  • Commerce / Retail: 185 individuals
  • General Labor: 34 individuals
  • Service Industry: 32 individuals
  • Craftsmanship: 10 individuals

Additionally, the project invited a successful role model, Mr. Atsawin Kabkaew, to the event. Today, Mr. Atsawin holds a stable primary job and runs a side business selling food and herbal drinks. He brought his herbal drinks to distribute to visitors at the Kamlangjai Project booth.

Event Atmosphere and Impact

The event featured a health run, presentations on rehabilitation models and services from public and civil society groups, mental and physical health education, vocational promotion, and interactive booths aimed at reducing stigma and granting opportunities to recovering individuals.

The atmosphere throughout the event was warm and filled with positive energy, reflecting Thai society's readiness to support recovering drug users. Many families, recovering individuals, and citizens participated side-by-side, proving that social acceptance and understanding are crucial elements for successful rehabilitation.

The "Recovery Run" serves as a vital mechanism in driving the rehabilitation of individuals with substance abuse issues under a public health and human rights framework. By focusing on creating opportunities, acceptance, and social participation, it aims to achieve concrete and sustainable solutions to Thailand's drug problems.

"Every opportunity granted by society is the power for a fresh start, and every new beginning brings hope for a stronger, safer Thai society that leaves no one behind."
